NEW FALL HOURS/LABOR DAY HOURS

Starting immediately, we’re changing our weekend hours. Saturdays we’ll be open until 9 p.m. That’s an entire half-hour more to enjoy our very delicious espresso drinks, gelato, and other treats! Sundays, we, like nearly everyone else the Steelers face, bow in defeat. In other words, we’ll close at 1 p.m. We expect these hours to remain in effect for September and October, and we’ll update you on holiday hour changes. (Thanksgiving is only 12 weeks from yesterday!)

We WILL BE OPEN LABOR DAY (MONDAY 9/5) FROM 8 a.m. UNTIL 11 a.m.

Have a great holiday weekend, everyone.

The Weather is Hot Hot Hot, and so is Gelato!

Mercurio’s Mulberry Street Gelato has become a very good friend in this hot summer we’re having. There’s nothing like having a good cup or cone of gelato on a hot summer evening, and so,

WE ARE STAYING OPEN UNTIL 8:30 ON SATURDAYS & SUNDAYS THROUGH AUGUST!

Bring your family, bring your friends, and enjoy Pittsburgh’s best gelato. Flavors vary, but there are at least 10 flavors to choose from every day – Dark Chocolate; Nutella; Lemon Raspberry; Black Cherry Bordeaux; Peach; Caramel Latte; Coconut Stracciatella; Death by Chocolate; Banana with Peanut Butter Cookie Dough; Cookies & Cream; Vanilla; Mint Chocolate Chunk; Banana & Chocolate; Pistachio; Black Forest; Honey Sunflower; Nutty Buddy; Strawberry Chocolate Chip; Chocolate Chip Cheesecake; Raspberry Sorbetto; and, Blackberry Sorbetto.

It’s a good bet that by the end of August, we’ll have even more choices. And don’t forget, we can make any of our flavors into the best darned milkshake or sundae ever.

August is going to be a very good month for you when you come to Blue Horse.

JULY GELATO FESTIVAL!

By now, you probably know that we are offering locally-made gelato this year. We are very happy to carry gelato from Mercurio’s Mulberry Street Creamery, located in Kittanning. Really good gelato, really nice people, and, it’s worth repeating, really good gelato. We really want to celebrate this local company, so we’re holding the first-ever Blue Horse July Gelato Festival. (Imagine that announced by the “Let’s get ready to rumblllllle” guy, and it’s really impressive – “It’s the July Gelato Festivalllllllll”). Anyway, the folks at Mercurio’s have been around for a long time, pasteurizing their own cream, making their own gelato bases, and stirring in by hand the add-in ingredients, like chunks of chocolate, black cherries and peanut butter cups.

The Festival begins Saturday, July 9th, and runs through Sunday, July 31st. First and foremost, we will remain –

                                                       OPEN UNTIL 8:30 P.M. ON SUNDAYS!

Like you, we know the post-Sunday dinner hankering for some good gelato, and so we’re making it very easy for you to satisfy that yen. Warm weather and late sunsets make it easy to get out of the house, head to Blue Horse, get a couple scoops of gelato, and sit outside enjoying life.

In addition to cups of gelato, we’ve got sugar cones, too. We’ll be making milkshakes and sundaes and root beer floats, and for pete’s sake, add a scoop or two on top of one of our homebaked fudge brownies. And let’s not forget our good friend, the affogato – a couple scoops of gelato topped off with a couple of shots of espresso. We’ll have pint specials, too. Three solid weeks of gelato ecstasy!

But wait, there’s even more to this Festival! We’ve seen you admiring the Blue Horse baseball caps we have for sale in the shop. Maybe you haven’t bought one because you don’t think you’d look good in one. Well, we think you’d look good in one of our caps. So, we’re going to have a raffle, making it pretty darn easy for you to capify your cabeza. Each time you buy gelato during the Festival, you’ll get a ticket. Write your name and phone number or email address on the ticket, and drop that ticket in the bowl at the shop.

                                  At 6 p.m. on July 31st, we’ll hold the drawing, when we’ll give away

                                                                 20 of our baseball caps

You don’t have to be present at the drawing (although we think it’d be more fun if you are). If you’re not there, we’ll contact you, and you’ll have until August 15th to pick up your cap. (Limit one cap per winner).

Believe it or not, it even gets better, ‘cause the more gelato you buy, the more free gelato you earn! That’s right, like our drink and bean rewards, we’re going to have gelato rewards during the Festival.

                          For every 30 ounces you buy, you get a 10% reward of 3 free ounces

Now, 30 ounces may sound like a lot, but it isn’t. Heck, 2 pints will get you to 30 ounces, so will 6 average-sized gelatos of 5 ounces each. Bring your family in on a Sunday evening, and you’ll probably earn your reward right then and there. All gelato purchases count toward the rewards, so add a scoop to your brownie or cookies, take a pint home for that cookout, try a caramel sundae.

Different flavors will be in the case at different times, but here are all the flavors we have to choose from:

                         Dark Chocolate;

                        Death by Chocolate (dark chocolate, brownie dough & chocolate chunks);

                        Peanut Butter Cup (chocolate with peanut butter cups);

                        Strawberry with Chocolate Chunks;

                        Cherry Bordeaux (cherry with chocolate-covered cherries);

                        Stracciatella (Italian vanilla with chocolate couverture);

                        Coconut Stracciatella (coconut, coconut pieces & chocolate couverture);

                        Mint Chocolate Chunk;

                        Peach;

                        Lemon Raspberry;

                        Caramel Latte; and

                        Raspberry Sorbetto (I love you, Mercurio’s).

You enjoyed your 4th of July, now continue celebrating with the July Gelato Festivallllllllllll!

NEW STAFF PICK COFFEE – KONGA

Every month or so, we choose one of our excellent coffees as the Staff Pick. This means a couple of things. First, it means that we want to bring your attention to that coffee, because we find it to be extra-delicious, and perhaps even very different from any coffees we’ve recently had. Sometimes, it’s chosen to introduce a new grower relationship, too. Second, and maybe even more important to you in these times of high gas prices, we take $2 off the pound price, to give you a little extra encouragement to try it. All in all, a pretty sweet thing, this Blue Horse Coffee Staff Pick.

Our new Staff Pick is called Konga. It is a washed coffee from the legendary coffee village of Yirgacheffe, in southern Ethiopia. The farmers’ cooperative, called Konga, grows the coffee trees high in the mountains, carefully harvesting the best cherries, and carefully washes the fruit to reveal the beans. Their hard work and careful attention to their craft have yielded the most delicious washed Yirgacheffe we’ve tasted in years.

As is typical of these coffees, this coffee is roasted a touch lighter, in order to fully bring all its flavors to the fore. And what flavors! It’s full of bright flowers, honey sweetness, and jasmine. If Earl Grey produced a coffee – this would be it. It’s simply delicious, that’s for sure. And when warm weather returns, brew some of this at extra strength, let it cool for a while, then put it over a handful of ice cubes. Putting this coffee over ice does not dilute it in the least – it’s just as flavorful, and refreshing to boot!

This is the perfect summer coffee. We’re proud to offer this Konga to you as our Staff Pick.
